A NOSSA URSULA!

«The New York Times (NYT) apresentou uma queixa junto da Provedoria de Justiça Europeia contra o Executivo comunitário devido à falta de resposta ao pedido do jornal norte-americano para divulgar as mensagens de texto entre a sua presidente, Ursula von der Leyen, e o CEO da Pfizer, Albert Bourla.

A queixa foi apresentada no dia 25 de Janeiro pelo NYT e a jornalista Matina Stevis-Gridneff, chefe da delegação do jornal norte-americano em Bruxelas, e divulgada no registo público do Tribunal de Justiça da União Europeia (TJUE) nesta segunda-feira. De acordo com o Politico (acesso pago), o NYT vai argumentar que a Comissão Europeia tem a obrigação legal de divulgar as mensagens em causa, já que podem conter informações sobre os acordos para a compra de milhões de doses de vacinas contra a Covid-19.

As mensagens entre von der Leyen e Albert Bourla foram trocadas durante o processo de compra das vacinas contra a Covid-19 por parte da Comissão Europeia, mas não constam do dossier que foi tornado público sobre os acordos com as farmacêuticas. O Executivo comunitário recusou sempre divulgar as mensagens, mesmo no Parlamento Europeu. (...)»

The war in Ukraine may be impossible to stop. And the US deserves much of the blame

«Even if we don’t accept Mr. Putin’s claim that America’s arming of Ukraine is the reason the war happened in the first place, it is certainly the reason the war has taken the kinetic, explosive, deadly form it has. Our role in this is not passive or incidental. We have given Ukrainians cause to believe they can prevail in a war of escalation.

Thousands of Ukrainians have died who likely would not have if the United States had stood aside. That naturally may create among American policy makers a sense of moral and political obligation—to stay the course, to escalate the conflict, to match any excess.

The United States has shown itself not just liable to escalate but also inclined to. In March, Mr. Biden invoked God before insisting that Mr. Putin “cannot remain in power.” In April, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin explained that the United States seeks to “see Russia weakened” …  

Mr. Biden’s suggestion that Mr. Putin be tried for war crimes is an act of consummate irresponsibility. The charge is so serious that, once leveled, it discourages restraint; after all, a leader who commits one atrocity is no less a war criminal than one who commits a thousand. The effect, intended or not, is to foreclose any recourse to peace negotiations. (...)»

GUERRA NA UCRÂNIA: ATÉ ONDE E ATÉ QUANDO O APOIO INCONDICIONAL DO OCIDENTE A ZELENSKY?

Teme-se o pior, quando até o New York Times publica artigos (19-05) com o título  «The War in Ukraine Is Getting Complicated, and America Isn't Ready».

«... As the war continues, Mr. Biden should also make clear to President Volodymyr Zelensky and his people that there is a limit to how far the United States and NATO will go to confront Russia, and limits to the arms, money and political support they can muster. It is imperative that the Ukrainian government's decisions be based on a realistic assessment of its means and how much more destruction Ukraine can sustain (...)

«Is the United States, for example, trying to help bring an end to this conflict, through a settlement that would allow for a sovereign Ukraine and some kind of relationship between the United States and Russia? Or is the United States now trying to weaken Russia permanently? Has the administration’s goal shifted to destabilizing Vladimir Putin or having him removed? Does the United States intend to hold Mr. Putin accountable as a war criminal? Or is the goal to try to avoid a wider war — and if so, how does crowing about providing U.S. intelligence to kill Russians and sink one of their ships achieve this? (...)»

UCRÂNIA: MAIS UMA CRIMEIA?

«...White House officials said on Monday that President Biden will impose economic sanctions on the two separatist regions of Ukraine that President Vladimir V. Putin recognized as independent, but stopped short of imposing any penalties directly on Russia.

The limited nature of the sanctions appeared intended to allow the United States and its European allies to hold in reserve the more aggressive sanctions they have threatened to impose on Moscow if Mr. Putin sends Russian armed forces into Ukraine, and to allow for the increasingly slim possibility of a diplomatic solution.

The European allies condemned the Russian action as a violation of international law and said they supported enacting sanctions. But the relative restraint of the American steps could also reflect debates among the allies over what actions by Russia should trigger the fuller sanctions and the difficulty of developing a unified and proportional response to incremental steps by Mr. Putin.»

 We’re Living Through the Boring Apocalypse
Fear generally works best for motivating one-time acts, especially those  that feel risky. Early this year, fear was probably an effective way to motivate people to get their first vaccine shot. But it tends to be less effective for driving repeated behaviors such as getting a second dose and a booster.
Of course, the problem isn’t just being oversaturated with fear messages. Safety behaviors have become so politicized that many people are skeptical not only of vaccines and face masks but also even of the threat that Covid-19 presents. For a fear message to get through and change behaviors, people need to be confident both that there’s a clear and present danger and that taking action will protect them.
