EU Council President Charles Michel pledges additional military support to Moldova
European Union (EU) has been considering to send additional military support to Moldova in the face of new attack threats, EU Council President Charles Michel said during his visit to Chisinau. President Charles Michel is travelling to Alexandroupolis, Greece, where he attended the inauguration of the construction works for a new LNG terminal, which will help phase out the EU’s dependence on Russian gas. On 4 May, he is in Chisinau, Moldova to meet with President Maia Sandu.
Speaking at a joint news conference with Moldovan President Maia Sandu, President of the European Council Michel said that EU will provide more military support to Moldova to deter external threats. Just recently, "mysterious" multiple explosions rocked Transnistria, an unrecognised breakaway state that is internationally recognised as part of Moldova but controlled by Russia. Separatist authorities blamed Ukrainian troops behind the explosions - an accusation that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy refuted. Zelenskyy blamed the Russian infiltrators for bombarding the region with lethal weapons, resulting in the killing of innocent civilians.
